A Map To Happiness. Silly or genius?

happiness_bulldogdrummond

My ultimate goal in life is to fully master that internal state of happiness.

I do this by doing the things I love and pursuing my dreams. I love writing stories, dating, meeting people and making them laugh, challenging myself and exploring the wonders of the world. My dreams in life are to become an author, share my stories and become a successful husband and father. That’s pretty much it.

A lot of people are surprised when they hear that last part; wife and kids. At the moment, I am single. But ultimately, I want those two things before I turn 30. I don’t want a family right at this moment because I know I’m not in any position to provide for children. I’m sure I could handle marriage but I won’t just marry any gal. That’s how divorces happen. Before I marry, I want to date a woman for a couple of years, get to know her and then pop the question. I want to take the time to learn about a woman and slowly bond/grow with her.

Most people I come across make the comment that I have my life figured out or “mapped” out as they say. Then they say they just go with the flow. I guess in a way I do have my life mapped out. I wanted to publish my first book before 21 and here I am 20, a week away from selling my first bundle of novels. I have a part time job at a diner and I’m in college to be an English major. I’m saving up to become financially independent by 22. I want the degree in English just in case novels don’t bring enough money to the table. Most people believe I’m in my mid to late 20’s before I tell them that I’m only 20.

I guess this map came from seeing many unhappy people as I grew up. “Stay a kid as long as you can,” they said. I saw divorced families, including my own as I grew up as well. I saw married couples who weren’t happy together, staying together because they had kids and not for love.

When I was younger, I knew I would eventually want a family. But as I got older I got a new goal. It was after my very first bad breakup. I was so depressed that I almost took my own life. It had hit me that I was unhappy, with myself. I sought happiness from others and when they were unable to give it to me, I felt miserable. After that breakup, my ultimate goal in life was to become happy, with me.

I read books, I meditated and I studied people who I perceived as “happy”. What was it? How was it obtained? I saw happy families and couples, and even singles that were just “happy”. Why? Were they rich? Did they have an awesome job? So I studied more and more. I even asked questions.

Happiness is a vague term. It has a different meaning to everyone. But these people all had something in common. They all weren’t rich, not all of them had cool jobs and some were even having tough times. But these people were all doing something they loved and had a belief in. Some were loving mothers who just enjoyed their kids. Others worked in some store but did something they loved like sell music Cd’s because they loved music or cook in a restaurant because they loved to cook.

Happiness to me is being content with where I am in life, challenging myself and achieving my dreams. I sat down and asked myself what I loved. What were my dreams? What made “me” happy?

1.Writing

2.fitness

3.music

4.companionship

5.laughing.

…just to name a few things that give me a thrill.

I dream of being an author and a successful husband and father. I had already been writing stories before my realization. But at 18 when I realized happiness was my ultimate goal, I sought to make my dreams come true. Marriage is a long-term dream. It isn’t something I’m willing to jump into on impulse. I want a successful marriage and I also want to be a successful husband. So I work hard to become financially independent before I even think about taking care of someone else. This is why I’m going for a degree even though I’ve already published my first book.

I published my book first so I could already have my own personal success or at least working towards it, before deciding to share my life with a woman. I want to have my dream in my hands because that is my personal achievement. It’s my internal joy. I am finally an author and I intend to become a damn good one. I wanted to be the kind of man a woman could look up to and admire before I decided to date anyone seriously.

My life isn’t necessarily “mapped” out. I don’t have a physical map or chart (although I do budget and make money goals), I just know what I want and I’m willing to do what it takes to get it. I make sacrifices and choices based on the future outcome. Sometimes I take different routes but I try to stay on course. So far, my map works for me. It keeps me from getting lost.

At the present moment, I can honestly say that I am happy with myself. I’m even proud. April 1st, 2014 marks the day that I achieved one of my first big milestones. No one held my hand, no one did it for me and no one gave it to me. I have supporters but I did 95% of the work alone.

I guess my point of this overly long post is to say, “Do what makes you happy.” If you have a dream, go for it. Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t or it’s silly. I used to feel a bit idiotic and in over my head for knowing what I want in life at age 18-20. People said I was too young, go have fun, blah blah blah.

But this works for me. This is “fun” and it makes me happy. The point of this poss is to say to you all, “Do what makes you happy.” Leave out all the rest. Do what it takes to reach your happiness.

Dream wild but don’t fall asleep. Shoot for the stars and take a risk.

So this took alot less time then expected

I thought that this would have taken 5 days but it actually took 2 hours. After I nailed trim sizing and margin numbers I had the words/lines per page matter to deal with. After not being able to find a way to do this without doing it manually, I decided to do it myself.

Here’s yesterday’s update of the format.

HERO'S TALE FInALThere were alot of unneeded spaces.

Here’s what it looks like now after I divided the lines into 27-30 throughout the entire book. Some breaks started between 27 and 30 to avoid widows. The most words per page will be 269 and the least will be 210. It gets no lower than 200 and no higher than 300.

1 copy

In the above page I’ve removed all of the extra spaces. I learned last night that Microsoft actually does the paragraph spacing for you. It will look a whole lot cleaner and my page count reduced as well. It all evened out. The below page is how it will look with paragraph spacing.

2

I’m noticing that I posted the wrong pages but that’s not really important. I’m just showing you all how this is changing as I format it. The two 12’s have different words because after breaking the lines evenly some parts went to the next page. After page breaks the final page number came to 486. That’s less than what estimated.

I can even increase the font size. I’m not sure if I’m going to increase fonts and to an actual word count per page. After paragraph spacing I’ll see how it looks to the eye. I’m making it to where the reader won’t have to read a lot all at once.

I’ll update later tonight. At the moment I’m making plans for the book cover. The front and back cover will have things mentioned in the book so I might have to buy props before photography and graphic designs. I’ll keep you all posted.

Oversleeping! Grrrr

What can I say, it happens right? I woke up on and off between 10 and 12, got to the shower at 2ish, now here I am. Regardless of when I get up, I will posts on here daily. I aim for the mornings and afternoons. Sorry if you guys missed last night’s post. I forgot to place tags on it -.-.

Last night I stayed up meddling with the book format and educated myself on inside and outside margins,  and gutter. I didn’t know what they were so when I formatted it, it was pretty much a shot in the dark. Luckily CreateSpace had a downloadable guide. That helped out ALOT.

The books recommended that I look at books that I like and measure them. This makes alot of since. If you want to look professional, why not learn from the professional? So I fiddled around with it. At first it was hard and frustrating. My manuscript kept running into the spine and sentence cutoffs happened to every single even page. Finally somewhere around 3 a.m I finally got the hang of it.

Trial and error. That’s how you win it. So after I was satisfied with my competence with the format work, I decided it was a break. I went back and forth with my favorite blogger for a while as I worked on another story “Beyond A Lifetime” I believe I gave the story description in my earlier posts. I stayed up close to 5 a.m writing it. Passion and creativity put together will make 5 hours seem like one hour. After whitening my teeth, I went to bed.

And now here I sit, blogging :). I checked the facebook fan page and the like count grew. Some likes on there aren’t from friends, meaning someone from here peeped. Thanks you all, I really appreciate it. I have to go grocery shopping and possibly to my college campus so I can’t stay much longer. I’ll update later tonight. Stay awesome bloggers.

I’m back in this!! Update 12-26-2013

Sorry I’m late bloggers/followers. I work at this cool little frozen yogurt shop and when I close shop it’s usually at 9. Takes me about 45 minutes then the drive home is like 30…if I don’t speed 🙂

So I texted my trusty editor during work to inform her of the page dilemma. Her reaction, priceless. I’m expecting her to freak out like I did, but she VERY CALM. I’d go as far to say nonchalant.

Her response went something like this.

Me: We have a problem. After formatting it and adjusting the trim size it came out to be over 700. Text me asap.

Her: So how is that a problem. The font should be smaller then.

I mean…DUH! Why hadn’t I thought of that?? Last night I almost had a heart attack or something. 700 pages, way too long. But I never thought about changing the font size AND THE STYLE! On top of her advice I got alot of advice on here. You all were helpful, thank you.

So here’s the update. After changing the font and style which was “Time New Roman-14” to Garamond-(Between 10-11). The pages knocked down to 456 with a word count of 115,176. So now I can breathe again. I’ll have format the paragraphs and footers again. But this looks great.

Now I’m excited. Hero’s Tale is an amazing Romance novel that I want to share with readers. I don’t want it turned away because readers see how thick the book is.

So now I need to format this doc, then do a book cover design. The sooner I get the cover then sooner I’ll be ready to start the whole process. My fingers are tingling from the excitement xD.

Well all, I have to get to work. I’ll be on here making comments and checking out blogs for a while too. Some of you have a tumblr and a facebook. As soon as I set the pages up, ADD ME. I can’t tell how great it is to finally know more writers, poets, musicians. You know, creative people. I’ll have links on my page soon 🙂

Well it’s time for me to get to formatting.

Update 12-23-2013

Hello bloggers and followers! Today was pretty insightful. I did brainstorming for book cover designs and calculated prices for the whole self-publishing process. I’ve decided to publish through a website so I had to get my numbers right.

I won’t tell you guys the price for all of this but I will say things are looking up. I spoke with my friend Tylor and he says that he will help me create a cover. The cover is top priority right now. Before anything can go forward I need the outside design of the book. So these next few weeks will be spent towards that.

With the holidays approaching it becomes pretty difficult to keep up with everything but somehow I’m managing. I’m keeping up with this blog, my book work, purchasing gifts for family members, while still having the leisure to hangout with friends and work on another book. How do I do it? I have no idea. It gives me a headache thinking about it. Even when I’m working and have school, somehow I find time. Small sacrifices win the battle. I know when I sell my first book all of this effort will be worth it.

My blog continually grows each day and it’s a real surprise to me. Day four or five and I’m already close to 40 followers. All of who are readers, writers or book reviewers. I’m liking it, I’m loving all of it. I’m confident that if I stay on top of things I’ll be taking a big step towards my dream to write novels for a living.

So at the moment, top priority=Book exterior design. I have a pretty good idea of what I want to have. The back cover will have some sort of symbolism or reference towards the story so when the reader reads they’ll look back saying, “Oh that’s why that’s there.” You know, to make things interesting. The front cover will have the title “Hero’s Tale” and I’m thinking of going with a beige color with either black or red text. Bear with me here, I’m still coming up with ideas. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Thank you for those who comment, follow and like my blog. All of you are very motivating and I appreciate it. Some would say 40 followers is relatively small compared to others. But to me it’s huge, especially when people have been commenting and liking posts daily. It really means a lot, so thank you! 🙂

Stay posted I’ve decided to update my blog between the hours 7-10 in the mornings AND at night. That’s not including random posts I’ll make with random thoughts and such. I probably won’t be punctual ALWAYS but I will try my best. Thanks again guys.

Starting the Saturday off pretty well.

I woke up around 9 am today. Last night was pretty great. I still can’t get over the party. It wasn’t anything ridiculous. Just good clean fun. Do you ever just have “fun” without having to do anything insane? Feels great.

The revision is going great. As I read through it I get more and more surprised with my editor’s work. She’s fairly young and not an “official” editor. She works for her school paper and edits/writes columns and loves to read. So hiring her was ideal  because I needed both an editor and a reviewer.

I took a risk with her but it seems to be worth it. This won’t be our first edit so she will have more time to gain experience and I’ll teach her a few things. I think it’s cool that I handpicked her like this. Once we publish our first title things won’t look good for just me but her too. She’ll be able to say, “Oh I edited a book that’s out on shelves”. How many people have that on their resume?

Anyway I have 98 pages to look over before I begin coverart designs. So far, the only things I’ve had to change are sentence structures and dialogue within the book in order to give the characters the demeanor I want them to have. You know, certain words, actions and phrases that one person just wouldn’t say or do but the other would. I’m glad I have her. I doubt things would be progressing at this pace if I didn’t have her help.

This isn’t the update. I do those at night. I set a goal to edit 88 pages a day in order to reach my deadline, 44 in the morning and 44 at night, not to mention the other book I’m working on. But I will probably end up finishing the revision tonight. One day ahead of schedule I’m liking it.

Update for 12-19-13

Wow, so today/yesterday went pretty well as far as research for book covers go. I helped my friend run a few errands as I did it. Spreading the holiday joy while being productive. What better way is there?

My friend is a film director so we have a lot in common which is why we probably hangout so much. He informed me about a designer who could do a professional cover for me or he could do it for free! What luck right? I’m still keeping my options open.

You see for this first publish I want to get all the experience possible. This is my first time being in control of so much. I control virtually all of this projects process, I control what my editor does and how much she’s paid, I control what gets seen, this blog, the fan page and a lot more so it’s a lot to manage so early.

Before I decide I want more help. I want to expand my options. And if getting help for a design becomes a desired path, I would want them to flesh my idea out better than I can. So at the moment my mind is leaning towards exploring the ideas I came up with today…or yesterday.

I’m going to try and stay up to date with the updates and posts. I’ve gained a few followers so far which I’m liking. I welcome any and all support. Thank you for those who read and choose to follow you are greatly appreciated. Don’t hesitate to leave feedback or email me. Thanks!

Research!!

What’s a book without a cover design right? It’s like seeing a blank building that has all of these fascinating items inside. On the inside there’s this world of low prices and rich items. But on the outside there’s…nothing.

So I need ideas for a book cover. What I’m doing today is going out to do some research. I’m going to look at hundreds upon hundreds of titles related to Romance to see what draws in eyes and what doesn’t.

Alot of people are saying just google some images but what fun is that? I like hands on experiences and getting out to see things with the first person perspective.

My editor has came up with a few ideas but I want to max out my options before I narrow in on a decision. So I’m about to head out and meet up with a friend. I’ll keep the updates at least daily.

If anyone has any ideas or advice for bookcovers, don’t hesitate to give input. The title is Hero’s Tale and it’s a romance.

Thanks 🙂

Writer’s checklist

So since publishing is approaching I’ve decided to make a checklist of things to do in order to ensure I’m ready by February. Here are my deadlines.

Look over Editor’s revision-Dec 22nd, 13

Formatting-Jan 5th, 14

Blogs/Fan pages-Jan 5th, 2014

Coverart designs/backcover blurb-Jan 25th, 14

Choose distributor-Feb 1st, 14

My book is 500 pages more or less. It started off at 558 but since I’ve been looking over the revision and formatting as I go, it’s been cut down to 504 with the reduced spaces and proper indenting. I have 200 pages left to format. My editor has finals so I’m doing things on my own until Monday(I gave her the weekend off to rest from finals). But I’m proud of my progress. So far, I am ahead of schedule.
