Bumps, Roads and the Pursuit of Being an Author

Hey there Bloggers and Followers !

Here’s the update for my process towards publishing; The interior check has went well. They told me I had to embed my fonts when I  save my document as a PDF format. Apparently that makes your document look exactly the way you type it. This might be why fonts tend to change when I work on different computers. But I think the embedding thing prevents that. So I learned something new. They also to me that my gutter was off a bit. Those things took seconds to complete. After adjusting my gutter size, the page number jumped to the 600’s.

I’ve been experimenting with various fonts and font sizes. Things look nice from pt 9-12. I tend to orbit around a nice 10 or 10.5. For “Hero’s Tale” I’ve decided to publish it with the Font “Times New Roman” with a size of 10. This brought back to a cozy 468 page count. I need to go through and remove space gaps the gutter size increase made. So I will be spending a good portion of my night, here at my college campus, fixing that. It shouldn’t take more than an hour’s time.

They have this interior design editor on CreateSpace that shows your manuscript on pages like an ebook. I’ll be honest and say it feels VERY exciting to see my book like that. It looks so clean and novel like. I know that it’s because I did the sizing and margin settings, but still. It feels nice.

I have yet decided on the next project that I will publish. I keep flipping back and forth between titles. I also keep coming up with new stories. I saw this picture on Tumblr. It was this woman in a school uniform and she was walking on a stone-lebdge, where students can sit. Beside here was a guy peering up at her as she smiled. That scene gave me an idea. I’m hesitant about sharing ideas vividly because I don’t want my originality stolen. So I’ll give a vague description sometime. Eventually I’ll start sharing back cover descriptions with you all.

I think it’s a pretty genius idea to come up with more story ideas at least weekly. You never run out of ideas and it keeps your imagination SHARP. I’m so good at this that I can make up stories on cue and this next thing is pretty bad…but I can lie pretty well? Apparently I tell pretty convincing tales and it’s all thanks to my talent in writing fiction. I don’t lie habitually though bloggers. I’m an honest man.

There isn’t much more to say about this publishing process beyond those two things I have to tweak. That’s why I don’t really post a lot. HOWEVER, i need to blog weekly if not daily. So now I’m going to start doing book reviews and giving fiction writing advice. I’ll also ask questions and offer writing advice.

I’m a baby with this publishing and formatting stuff. But I’m pretty good at writing a book and getting a manuscript finished. I’ve finished two in one year. So I’ll offer advice on things that I know. So Ask me stuff followers! Gotta go to class bloggers, but you know I’ll be back 😀

Enough revisions, it’s time to publish!

20140214-235141.jpg

Bloggers/Followers this is the moment I’ve been slowly making my way towards and the time has finally come. It’s time to publish my first book.

Today has to be one of the longest, yet most exciting days ever. I spent the majority of the day at my college campus. After classes, I spent hours reading over the last chapters of Hero’s Tale. Then it was into the publishing process.

There are three steps: Setup, Review and finally Distribution.

I’ve completed 3/4 steps of the setup process. I’ve gotten isbn’s, finished title info and obviously the cover is ready. The final step Is the interior. I decided to get assistance with it since it’s my first time doing this. So the pros
will be calling me sometime tomorrow in order to help me get things ready.

I’ll be honest and say I’m overly relieved now that I’m finished with the revision. This took so, so long. Next time around I will make things ALOT easier. Want advice on editing a book in a way that makes sure it’s perfect? Ok check this out

GOLDEN RULE-DO NOT read your story over multiple times AS you write it. What will happen is; you will get bored with your work. This happened when I was doing my final read with Hero’s Tale. I LOVED the story so much that when I wasn’t writing, I was reading finished chapters over..and over..AND OVER.

So once it came time to edit, it felt like actual WORK. You would think, hey I love this book, editing will be fun. Noo my friends it was tough and yes, it helps if the book is a fun read and fresh. But for me, I was on my 100th read during the 10 day push. I’m sure even Shakespeare got tired of reading his books. If you want the edits and revisions to be fun, SAVE THE READING FOR LATER. Seriously, it’s not going anywhere and it’ll still be brilliant. Write your story all the way through THEN read it.

Read these tips and I promise you’ll be rockin when it comes time to publish…at least I hope so 😀

1.Print out your manuscript! Don’t be an idiot like me and try to correct the document on the computer because you WILL miss things.

2. Have three different colored pens; one for typos and grammar, one for adding and deleting lines or dialogue;story related stuff and a third for extra stuff I can’t think of at the moment. USE THE PENS TO EDIT. Do not use your computer.

3.Separate your book into chapters. Edit it chapter for chapter. Take your time and read over each one SEVERAL TIMES. Do it until your eyes sweat(not possible..but you get the point)

4.Check for mistakes in your story. Maybe you called the main character the wrong name in a line. Perhaps it’s suddenly 2016 when it should be 2010 or the character is now 17 when she just said she was 18! Yes, I made all of these mistakes. Mixups in the story will happen. Especially when you stay up for extended periods of time as you write. Learn from my mistakes people. It’s not a game!

I’m seriously bookmarking this for myself, so when I’m ready to edit my next book in 3-6 months, it won’t take as long as it did. I remember back when I first wrote HT, how in love I was with the book. The first edit was fine, however I didn’t follow the above steps!

People read the book and quickly found typos! I read that book over maybe three times and still there were errors. That’s when I hired my editor. She went in and dug out all of the grammar errors, typos and did me a solid save. However, even editors miss things. I’m so glad I read over HER edit because I still saw things that were off. This is why I prefer doing things on my own. Only you know how perfect your book should be. So yeah, next time around things will be done differently 🙂 it’s a learning process.

So with my final read out the way and publishing kicking in, you probably might wonder what I might do. I’m writing another book! Duh.

People think I’m insane. “Take a month off, relax,” they say. No way I love writing. I missed it and now that I don’t have to worry about deadlines, I can finally either finish a project or start fresh! I might just finish a current project though. I never get tired of writing stories, it’s the formatting and editing that makes me tired. But I won’t have to do that again for at least 3-6 months. XD

My first book was a romance novel. At the moment I have action, adventure, fantasy, more romance and some mystery. I’ve also been exploring the realms of erotica. I’m SO sorry followers. I was a little hesitant to write it and it was sort of tabbooish. But I had ideas and then I typed them, liked them and now I have a couple of erotic tales.

I’m pretty sure the next book I publish WONT be an erotica, then again, who knows. I might make some pseudonym so no one knows I made the next top selling erotica novel.

What even classifies as an erotica? Is there an actual guideline or no? Someone help me out here.

Well, I’m about to go take a long deserved hot shower, read a nice book and if there’s time, type some bits to a story I’ve been working on. Stay tuned for the progress with Hero’s Tale. Things are about to get HOT-pun intended.

32/34 Chapters read with less then 60 pages left to read!!

The push has been going well and I’m proud to say that this final read should be finished before the day ends. Currently I am in one of my college classes, so I can’t really work on Hero’s Tale with 100% effort being placed into it.

As soon as I leave class at 10:50 a.m I will be making my way to the cafe and finishing this final read. I plan to send the manuscript to Createspace immediately. I can’t begin to explain how ready I am to be finished with this read. On Createspace I’ve already chosen my bookcover, made the back cover desription, title subtexts, etc. The only thing I had to fix were my margins and trim size. Then I had to do this final FINAL read so I knew it was ready.

So by the end of today, the publishing process will have began. Hoorah, I am turning the page bloggers. It’s time to start a new chapter. I can’t wait to see what challenges it brings. I’m sure it will take some effort and hardwork but let’s be honest, all of that stuff thrills me. It’s not like I’m a half-stepper. The hardwork makes all of this fun. When that box comes to my doorstep, I open it and hold my book for the first time, it will all be worth it. It will be my accomplishment and my dream will literally be in my hands.

And how could I forget the amazing bloggers, friends and followers I’ve met through this entire process. There are a few people on here worth mentioning who motivate me to push each and every day. They know who they are. Trust me, there are times where I really don’t feel like editing, revising, reading and formatting. I can honestly say I never get tired of actually writing. There have been SEVERAL moments where I was writing a new story or adding to a project, when I should have been reading over Hero’s Tale.

Without family, friends, followers and fellow bloggers motivating me, I’m not sure that I would have gotten this close or dedicated. So thank you 🙂 . I’m hoping to blow you all away with this book that I have seriously gotten attached to. It worked me to the core but the story itself is what I admire. I like it. I can’t wait to get started on my next project. I really really want to publish Love Bleeds Red which is my first written novel and personal favorite. But that’s a series. Before I start a series, I want a few singles out there.

Eventually though, I’ll have all my books out there. Thanks you guys, you’re awesome.

27 Chapters out of 34 READ!!

Bloggers and Followers! I have GREAT GREAT NEWS.

This is the first time in fictionfanaticandromance history that I’ve posted three times in one day…it’s only a couple months old, give or take but still! I’m posting because I couldn’t wait until the morning.

I am currently on chapter 27 of 34 with my final check before I jump into publishing. It’s very tiring but I know I can do it. I’m taking a one hour break to let my attention span recover then I’m going back in to read three more chapters. By tomorrow I will only have FOUR chapters left to check. I’m excited! Hoorah!!

I’m excited for several reasons: The most obvious reason; I’m publishing my very first book! I’ll be out there people. No more will I say “oh I want to be an author” I will be able to PROUDLY say, “I’m an author.”

The second reason is, well I’ll be frank, I’m pretty much at my wits end with Hero’s Tale. I love this book, it’s my first publish and it’s my baby. But I’m tired of reading it over and over and over and over and over! I’m starting to have dreams about scenes in the book now. And I’m not even the main character, I narrate lol. I’m pretty sure I’ll read it 50 more times at least, once it’s in paper back form in my hands. Oh yes! I’ll be in love with the book for at least half a year.

The third reason is; I’m ready to put all my energy into my next project. I really miss writing and even though I’ve done pilots and shorts, I miss writing entire books and creating magical or romantic settings freely without edits. I’ve learned so much from my work with Hero’s Tale that I believe the next book I put out will be even better. I’m more descriptive, words flow better and I even wrote some stories in the PAST TENSE. Haha 😉 that’s not all I have under my sleeve bloggers. I have to decide which two stories I want to focus on a finish before January. Stoked stoked stoked!

This is a long, tiring yet so grand process. I’m betting I’ll have some glitches in this publishing process. But all dreams come with a fight and I’m not exactly the type to stay down. I’m in it to win it. This book will be out for all to buy and read. Mark my words.

Thank you so much for your support. This is a great experience

Short story of the month: First Girlfriend “Kissinger”

Hello Bloggers and Followers 😀 my final read is going well and I should be finished before Saturday. I’m extremely pumped up and ready to kick things off.

As I work on publishing my first book, I’ve been making sure to keep my writing and story telling skills sharp. Everyday I’ve been creating new story ideas and pilots, so I will have project options after Hero’s Tale is out of my hair.

I have several books that are made to be series which kind of daunts me because if I start a series, people will expect the sequels right after the prequel. This means I would have to make a book yearly. Writing a book isn’t exactly a short process. After you get your idea down, you have to go back and add or take out things. Then there’s the editing process, revisions, yatta yatta.

I’m holding off on starting a series until I drop a few singles. Hero’s Tale will be my first single. At the moment I have about 7 ideas for singles. I’ve wrote at least one chapter for each and the titles are as follows: Redhair and Stoplights, M.106, The 50 Shades of Royalty, Terror of the Night, Purple Crow, Letters to a Ghost, and Blink.

I think those are enough titles to get the ball rolling after my first publish. I plan to self publish another book after Hero’s Tale and try my luck with traditional publishing and send a book to a publishing house. So I will be writing two more books this year. Maybe three…i just love to write. But I’m trying to be realistic here.

Anyway all of that leads up to the subject of my monthly short stories. As I’ve said last month, I will posting a short story each month of this year. IF I should miss a month, two will be posted the following month.

This month’s story is a story called, First Girlfriend: Kissinger. This story was actually a narrative I had to write for my English 111 class. It tells about the time I met my first girlfriend and first couple of experiences with the opposite sex. There is nothing raunchy in this so sorry erotica fans, maybe next time.

I scored a 150/150 on this. There were no corrections needed beyond my formatting which I put in book form to put my touch of style in there. Somehow I messed up the lines so theres like 13 lines per page when it should be 25-30. I have no clue how this happened. Anyway it’s much shorter than last month’s short story. 8 pages, enjoy 😀

The journey towards publishing. Excited? YES!

I’m on fire bloggers and followers! I’ve been diligently reading through my book and I have 186 pages left. It feels amazing. I have literally everything set to start. I have the money, the connections and most importantly, THE BOOK. The final read is literally the last thing I have to do before I start the process. This is so fun.

Remember back In December when I was doing page sizing, trim and margin adjustments? Then I had to do book cover research. Then I had to fix my spacing SEVERAL times and now, here I am, pages away from publishing. I keep thinking about this. It’s like wow, I’m really going to do this. A guy I know said that the process takes about three weeks.

In a month more or less, I will be living my dream. I will be able to say that I’m an author and I’m not even 21 yet! That was my goal. Publish a book before 21. Young and successful, I’m loving it. During this prep work I’ve wrote several starter chapters for new books. I’ve came up with five: Terror of the Night, Redhair and Stoplights, Flames, M.106 and The 50 Shades of Royalty.

That last title is a play on words. There’s no connection to the 50 Shades of Grey beyond the title. The Royalty part hints at who or what the story is about. In that story I explore one of my fantasies with er..um, yeah. Just check it out when I finish it. I’m not sure if this will be fanfiction or a serious novel. But it’s pretty good so far.

So people have been talking to me about this book, asking what my expectations are and what I want. Friends are now calling me “popular” because of my pages and saying I’m going to go far. Even family members believe this novel will sell big, because ‘this is my gift and I’m oh so talented’ as they say.

And sure I’d love to hit big. If this book sold thousands I’d be overjoyed. But I have this “expect anything” attitude. Im positive this book will sell copies. I have no doubt. But as far as hitting BIG, my expectations are at a middle mark. I’m ok with whatever. If it sells millions I’ll be happy. If it sells not so much I’ll be happy and I’ll keep writing and publishing my books.

I don’t want to get caught up in the success, fame, popularity or whatever and lose sight of myself. I’m trying to remain as humble as possible. I mean look how far I’ve come. I’m SO close. There are a lot of people who wish they were this close to their dreams. I am just grateful that I have this opportunity to actually get my work out for people to read. I just want to be an author. I feel if i start boasting and getting caught up in the noise, I’ll jinx myself or something.

In short, yes I want to go big. Heck I want this thing to BLOW UP. But my expectation is this. I expect to publish my first book and get myself out there and known as an author. This is the career starter that will lead into more publishes. Now I will say this. I believe if I never give up on this and keep sharing my stories, someday, I WILL sell a top seller or at least win awards. Now if I get a homerun on the first swing, heck, I’ll take it.

Haha. Thanks for reading you all. This is great. I’m so happy that I could cry. But I WONT. Lol I’ll see you guys around.

Checking in. Day SIX!

Alrighty followers and bloggers. I’m six days in and I’ve read 260 pages out of 491 of Hero’s Tale. I’ve been attacking this on and off. 3 chapters in the morning and three at night. If I read three a day until day 10, things should be fine.

It’s so cool how as I read I still enjoy this story. I guess since I wrote it and read it several times that it’s hard for me to read for a long time. But still the characters grow on me. I’m more confident that people will like this as I read through it.

So I have some NEWS!! Ok, I rehired my editor after or little scuffle. It felt a little harsh to let her go so fast so I talked things over with her. Another thing; I’ve found designers who I can personally meet with. I’ve contacted one who says she will sketch up some ideas. I’m not sure if it will be ready in time for this first publish. But I’m making more than one version of HT; ebook, paperback and hardcover. Her design will be on the hardcover most likely. OR my next book which I want to publish before January.

It’s all pretty exciting. I think I’m also going to be on here more frequently these next few weeks. So don’t get too annoyed of my posts start taking over the feeds. Later bloggers xD
